A friend of mine in Louisiana, says that her family plants a round garden with tomato cages in center of what they use as their compost pile. The tomato vines grow around the structure and work down around with plantings of different veggies.

They just keep adding to the compost heap in the center, watering it regularly, which allows it to seep through to the veggies as a compost-type tea.

Haven't tried it yet, but sounds like a great fix in small gardens.
